airports & runways (pt. 1)

okay… sorry for the delay on the post-age ladies and gentlemen.  i’m in an airport in akron, oh, listening to the akron/family (this deemed appropriate) waiting for my 11:40 flight.  it is now 10:32am.  i’m also thumbing through romans 14.
you see, alot has gone on since my last post, but i havent felt the opportunity, yes, nor the allotted time to recollect my past of the last few weeks.  simply put, i’ll run through what has been up.

on december 12, the team (for those who are clueless, i travel with an international children’s choir, better known as the ‘central team.’) and i were supposed to leave the dallas, tx area for the memphis, tn area, then make it to louisville, ky for a concert on thursday, the 14th.  we also had a concert on sunday, the 17th.  anyways (i’ll enlighten you again, with the fact that our team travels with a 15+ passenger bus and an RV pulling a car), the RV was having problems.  this is nothing new, as i believe we have gotten the crap end of the stick with the RV.  the other 2 teams got new RV’s while we had the 5 year old one, which had incidentally been on the road gathering mileage for three years in a row.  alas, i am not one wanting to be a complainer, but sometimes, fact is fact.  everyone agrees.  moving on… the RV was in the shop on tuesday, while we were supposed to leave around 10 for TN.  basically - the ultimatum was to either leave the RV there, in hopes of getting in january, when we return to texas or leave someone behind (this being me) hoping the RV would get fixed within the week.  it was a gamble, but the team leaders decided on leaving me in the dallas area for however long it would take for the RV to get fixed.  this was a mini-vacation!  a perfect precursor to the 5-day vacation i get for christmas, with my family in raleigh, nc.  so… over the next couple of days, i would drive to the same starbucks every day, ‘on call,’ to see if the RV would be ready.  tuesday, wednesday, and thursday rolled by, with me driving to the starbucks, reading, drinking coffee, then returning to my hotel at dusk and hanging out with friends.  it ended up being a great deal of fun.  hung out with my old buddy, jeff capps which was glorious fun, obviously.  then, a friend that goes to baylor, but lives in raleigh, drove up to see me!  good times, great oldies!  fun was in order.  thursday night, i went out with an old college friend.  so all in all - good times were had while i was just ‘on call.’  vacation time, you know.

well, friday, get the call around 10:00 that the RV was ready.  glorious?  sort of.  what lied ahead for me was a 12 hour trip from dallas to louisville, driving an RV - pulling a car.  if you’ve never made the 12 hour drive with an RV, you aren’t missing much.  but if you do decide to make the trip, i suggest sunflower seeds (ranch will do), lots of red bull and coffee, an ipod or cds (take your pick), gum, and a cell phone charger and extra minutes.  let’s just say i used a good amount of my 1000 minute monthly plan on that trip.

yours truly,

nolan
